Guidance for Education and Public Outreach Activities Under Sequestration

NASA has taken the first steps in addressing the mandatory spending cuts called for in the Budget Control Act of 2011. The law mandates a series of indiscriminate and significant across-the-board spending reductions totaling $1.2 trillion over 10 years.

As a result, NASA has been forced to implement a number of new cost-saving measures, policies, and reviews in order to minimize impacts to the mission-critical activities of the Agency. Guidance regarding conferences, travel, and training that reflect the new fiscal reality in which the agency must operate has been provided.

NASA’s Digital Learning Network Event — Space Shuttle Atlantis Celebration

NASA invites students and educators to tune in for a special Digital Learning Network webcast event celebrating space shuttle Atlantis. NASA will be celebrating the unveiling of Atlantis’ new home at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. This celebration will include special guests who have worked on Atlantis.

My NASA Data: Using Live-Access Weather and Climate Data (Grades K-12)
June 28, 2013, at 3 – 4 p.m. EDT
Aerospace education specialist Marilé Colón Robles will lead participants through a series of lessons using the live access server of the My NASA Data website. Participants will learn how to search and download lesson plans from the My NASA Data website. These lessons allow students to analyze real NASA climate data.

Exploring Solar Energy: Electricity for Space Exploration (Grades 6-9)
July 1, 2013, at 4 – 5 p.m. EDT
Join aerospace education specialist John Weis as he discusses ways to use the online resource “Electricity and Power in Space” to provide an exciting context for teaching concepts related to energy, electricity and circuits. Participants will be guided through a series of activities relating to circuits, voltage, amperes, ohms and much more.

Classroom Lunacy: Studying the Moon (Grades 3-8)
July 2, 2013, at 4 – 5 p.m. EDT
Aerospace education specialist Rick Varner will share teaching strategies that guide students to understand the Earth-moon system in concrete ways. This webinar highlights NASA resources about the phenomena of moon phases and eclipses. Recent discoveries from the latest NASA missions also will be shared.

MAVEN New Media Professional Development Workshop

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN, or MAVEN, mission will explore the planet’s upper atmosphere, ionosphere and interactions with the solar wind. Set to launch in November 2013, the mission will provide invaluable insights into the history of Mars’ atmosphere and climate, liquid water and planetary habitability.

The MAVEN New Media Professional Development workshop will bring together bloggers, podcasters, social media users and other science communicators for a two-day intensive workshop with space scientists. The workshop will take place Aug. 23-25, 2013, at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder. The workshop will be a collaborative professional development opportunity for attendees to learn about current issues surrounding the evolution of the Martian climate, with an emphasis on MAVEN.

Most expenses to attend the workshop will be defrayed; individual amounts will be determined following selection.

Student Spaceflight Experiments Program — Mission 5 to the International Space Station

The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education and the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Space Education, in partnership with NanoRacks LLC, announce an authentic science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, opportunity for school districts across the U.S. and space station partner nations. The newest flight opportunity, Mission 5 to the International Space Station, or ISS, gives students across a community the ability to design and propose real experiments to fly in low Earth orbit on the International Space Station. This opportunity is part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program, or SSEP.

Each participating community will receive a real microgravity research mini-laboratory capable of supporting a single microgravity experiment, and all launch services to fly the mini-lab to the space station in spring 2014 and return it to Earth. An experiment design competition in each community — engaging typically 300+ students — allows student teams to design and propose real experiments vying for their community’s reserved mini-lab. Content resources for teachers and students support foundational instruction on science in microgravity and experimental design. Additional SSEP programming leverages the experiment design competition to engage the community, embracing a learning community model for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, education.

This competition is open to students in grades 5-12 and college. Informal education groups and organizations are also encouraged to participate. Interested communities must inquire about the program no later than June 30, 2013. The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education is available to help interested communities in the U.S. secure the needed funding.

Center for Gulf Studies Summer Speaker Series

The INFINITY Science Center in Mississippi invites the public, both young and old, to meet some of the leading researchers in the world studying the Gulf of Mexico. INFINITY is hosting the First Annual Center for Gulf Studies Summer Speaker Series. These lectures will take place each Monday at 11 a.m. CDT through August. The lectures are free with paid admission to the INFINITY Science Center.

Researchers associated with the Center for Gulf Studies will discuss what they are learning and discovering about the Gulf and its importance to our living, playing and working in and around its waters. Next week’s lecture on July 1, 2013, include a discussion titled “Earth Versus Mars: Can Life From Earth Conquer the Red Planet?” led by Dr. Scott Milroy.

NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellowships

The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) supports NASA’s goal to expand scientific understanding of the Earth and the universe in which we live.

Selected by a competitive peer-review process, NPP Fellows complete one- to three-year Fellowship appointments that offer scientists and engineers unique opportunities to conduct research in fields of science relevant to NASA.

These opportunities advance NASA’s missions in Earth science, heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics, space bioscience, aeronautics and engineering, human exploration and space operations, and astrobiology. Opportunities are available at NASA Centers and other NASA-approved sites.

As a result, NPP Fellows contribute to national priorities for scientific exploration, confirm NASA’s leadership in fundamental research, and complement the efforts of NASA’s partners in the national science community.

U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, and foreign nationals eligible for J-1 status as a Research Scholar may apply. Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent degree before beginning the fellowship, but may apply while completing the degree requirements. Applicants who earned the Ph.D. more than five years before the deadline date are categorized as Senior Fellows; all applicants, no matter their category, must apply and become eligible for an NPP award via the same process.

Interested applicants may apply by one of three annual application deadlines: March 1, July 1, and November 1.

Going to Mars With MAVEN Campaign

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission, also known as MAVEN, is set to launch to the Red Planet in November 2013. And your name and personal message could hitch a ride to Mars!

Names that are submitted to the Going to Mars With MAVEN website will be placed on a DVD that will be carried aboard the MAVEN spacecraft. Participants who submit their names to the Going to Mars campaign will be able to print a certificate of appreciation to document their involvement with the MAVEN mission.

The MAVEN spacecraft will also carry personal messages from three contest winners. The Message to Mars contest is looking for personal messages in the form of haiku poems to send to the Red Planet. The public will vote to select the top three entries. Entries must be written in English. Winning haikus will be carried aboard the MAVEN spacecraft and will be prominently displayed on the MAVEN website.

Names and entries for the Message to Mars contest are due July 1, 2013.

Historical NASA Space Artifacts Available for Educational Use

NASA is inviting eligible educational institutions, museums and other organizations to screen and request historical space artifacts.

The artifacts represent significant human spaceflight technologies and processes and the accomplishments of NASA’s many programs. NASA and the General Services Administration worked together to ensure broad access to space artifacts and to provide a Web-based electronic artifacts viewing capability. The Web-based artifacts module is located at http://gsaxcess.gov/NASAWel.htm.

Eligible participants may view the artifacts now and request specific items at the website through July 1, 2013. Only schools and museums are eligible to receive artifacts. They must register online using an assigned Department of Education number, or through the state agency for surplus property in their state.

The artifacts are free of charge. Eligible organizations must cover shipping costs and any special handling fees. Shipping fees on smaller items will be relatively inexpensive, while larger items may involve extensive disassembly, preparation, shipping and reassembly costs. NASA will work closely with eligible organizations, on a case-by-case basis, to address any unique special handling costs.

Special items, such as space shuttle thermal protective tiles, space shuttle main engine turbine blades and packages of three packets of astronaut food are also offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Instructions for requesting artifacts and special items are linked on the website home page.

NASA GIRLS and NASA BOYS Mentoring Project

NASA is looking for the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators. To jump-start the future of potential explorers, Women@NASA has created a mentoring project that offers a one-of-a-kind experience for middle school students. Participants will get to explore the possibilities of a career in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The project will feature one-on-one mentoring from NASA employees. Participants will complete online lessons with their mentors while virtually connected through Skype or Google Chat.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens in grades 5-8 or home-school equivalent. The mentoring project will take place over a five-week period during the summer.

Professional Development Opportunity for Science on a Sphere Installations

NASA’s next mission to Mars — the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, or MAVEN, mission — is set to launch in November 2013. By examining the loss of volatile compounds, such as water and carbon dioxide, MAVEN will provide insight into the history of Mars’ atmosphere and climate, liquid water and habitability.

Invisible Mars, a new show for Science On a Sphere, explains what we know about Mars’ climate and how the MAVEN mission will help us understand how and why it’s changed over time. Join MAVEN scientists, engineers and educators at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Nov. 15-16, 2013, for a professional development training on how you can use Invisible Mars at your venue.

Participants may be given a stipend to help pay for their travel. Participants and their families will be invited to attend the MAVEN launch, currently scheduled for Nov. 18, 2013.

Sally Ride EarthKAM Summer 2013 Mission

Students and educators are invited to join NASA for the Sally Ride EarthKAM Summer 2013 Mission from July 10-12, 2013. Guide your students in hands-on research as they program a camera aboard the International Space Station to take pictures of specific locations on Earth. The optional online curriculum at the Sally Ride EarthKAM website is targeted at middle school students, but could easily be adapted for other grade levels. All students and educators are welcome — including participants in summer and after-school programs.

LAUNCH Systems Challenge 2013

NASA, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Department of State and Nike recently announced a challenge to identify 10 game-changing innovations that could transform the system of fabrics to one that advances equitable global economic growth, drives human prosperity and replenishes the planet’s resources.

Challenge organizers are interested in innovations with potential to scale in two years, as well as game-changing early stage technologies and prototypes. Innovations can be business models, financial instruments, technologies and programs that accelerate research, education and capacity building.

The LAUNCH Systems Challenge 2013 is open through July 15, 2013.

Forum partners will select 10 innovators to present their technology solutions at the LAUNCH Systems Challenge 2013 forum, which will be held Sept. 26-29, 2013, at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

NASA and the LAUNCH Council — thought leaders representing a diverse and collaborative body of entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, government, media and business — will participate in the forum and help guide these innovations forward. The selected LAUNCH innovators will receive networking and mentoring opportunities from influential business and government leaders, as well as portfolio presentations.

LAUNCH was created to identify, showcase and support innovative approaches to global sustainability challenges. LAUNCH searches for visionaries whose ideas, technologies or programs show great promise for making tangible impacts on society in the developed and developing worlds.

Free Virtual Professional Development Workshop Series: Rockets to Racecars

Start your engines! Engage students in real-world mathematics and incorporate standards-based hands-on activities to make mathematics challenging and fun. Bring the thrill of racing and its connections to flight into your classroom with the “Rockets 2 Racecars” educational materials.

Learn about tires and air pressure as you calculate the effects of temperature on regular tires as well as Space Shuttle and racecar tires in the session “Measure Up and Calculate.” Use mathematics to interpret air pressure and air flow data on airplane wings and racecar spoilers in “May the Force Uplift You…or Not!”. Test the variables that affect cars’ stability to travel by constructing a balloon-powered race car and maneuver through different angles to see force in action in “Newton’s Angle on Force and Motion.” Design a capsule to land on Mars and see its effectiveness by calculating speed or rate of descent in “Drag Race to Mars Engineering Design Challenge.”
